Shaka Smart will remain at VCU and not cash in right now on his instant superstardom.
CBS Sportsline’s Gregg Doyle was the first to report Smart will remain with the Rams.
For the 33-year-old it caps a whirlwind three weeks that saw him go from relative anonymity to rising star to the hottest commodity on this spring’s coaching market.
Smart had talked to N.C. State on Sunday night and Monday morning regarding their open vacancy but ultimately decided to take his name out of the running.
“[Smart] is staying,” VCU athletic director Norwood Teague said in an email, according to the Charlotte Observer. “We agreed to terms this [Monday] morning.”
Details of Smart’s new deal were to be released later Monday, school spokesman Scott Day said.
Smart has accumulated a 55-21 record over his two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. He led the Rams to the CBI Championship last year before leading VCU on an unlikely run to the Final Four this year.
