Mike Brey, AP Coach of the Year

Mike Brey is The Associated Press’ coach of the year. His Fighting Irish finished second in the Big East and fifth in the final AP poll.

Brey is the first Notre Dame coach to win the award and the second consecutive Big East coach to win the award – Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim last year.

The Fighting Irish finished the regular season with a 27-7 record – the second most wins in school history. They moved onto the postseason as a No. 2 seed. They eventually lost to No. 10 Florida State in the second round.

Brey received the award Friday with 28 of the 65 votes. Steve Fisher of San Diego State was second with 14 votes.

Keep in mind, voting was done before the NCAA tournament. So coaches of teams that make unlikely runs are overlooked.
