NCAA schools following Title Nein, not Title IX

Call me a pessimist. Or cynical. Or both. But this doesn’t even surprise me.

Apparently, all across this great nation of our, NCAA Division I schools are “fudging it” when it comes to athletics.

In other news, gravity still exists.

Today, the New York Times is reporting numerous Division I schools are not in compliance with Title IX. They wernt one step further reporting that many are distorting their athletic participation numbers so they can remain compliant.

Shocking.

The newspaper analyzed public records from colleges and universities and federal participation statistics from all 345
institutions at the NCAA’s highest level.

The Times found some schools were “padding” the rosters of women’s teams with unqualified players or counting athletes who no longer wanted to compete.

If you read “unqualified” as “no longer eligible” and “no longer wanted to compete” as “off the team” then the biggest schools in the NCAA might be in some trouble.

The New York Times actually reported something that surprised me, though. Certain schools, no joke, counted male practice players as women and “trimmed” the rosters of men’s teams.

Title IX was passed in 1972. The landmark federal legislation is designed to create equal educational opportunities for men and women.
