Josh Selby is about to live up to the name “one-and-done.”
His career in the college ranks is over. And his NBA career may never start.
When Selby signed his letter of intent to Kansas it wasn’t an orientation – it was a parade.
Touted as the next big thing, like many high school recruits, the newest Jayhawk flew in and landed a slew of transgressions. First, a season-opening nine-game suspension. The the injuries set in, multiple, various injuries.
By the time he was ready to return, he was coming off the bench in the NCAA tournament.
But it’s not like he turned over a new leaf after the season. He wook his talents to Las Vegas to work out rather than attend school. Or the season-ending team banquet.
Air-ball.
It gets worse, though. Then, Selby announced via Twitter on Thursday that he would declare for the draft and forgo the rest of his education.
“But it’s a new journey in my life now,” Selby tweeted. “I will not return to Kansas next year. Making my dream a reality. #NBA baby.”
He was met with some discontent from some Kansas fans but it didn’t deter his dream.
“All this negative energy is creating a monster,” he tweeted. “Y’all light the fuel up inside me. #hatersmymotivator.”
Leaving for the NBA after averaging 7.9 points isn’t exactly normal. Doing so after only 26 games? Down right absurd.
“I feel good about Josh leaving here,” head coach Bill Self said in a statement. “Knowing he took care of his business the way that he should have taken care of it.”
