Tennessee hired Missouri State’s Cuonzo Martin to be their next basketball head coach.
Martin takes over for Bruce Pearl.
Martin was 61-41 in three seasons at Missouri State. The Bears improved from 11-20, in his first season, to 26-9 in the 2010-11 season. The Bears were Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships (for the first time ever) in 2010-2011 and Martin the MVC coach of the year honor.
He spent eight years as an assistant coach at Purdue under Gene Keady and Matt Painter, too.
“Cuonzo is among the most promising young coaches in the game,” Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton said in a statement. “He has a proven track record of success as a head coach at Missouri State.”
He’ll be bringing his talents to Knoxville not sure about what he is facing. The school’s post-season and recruiting future is up in the air given the NCAA sanctions that are likely coming in the wake of Pearl’s misconduct. The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions will meet with the school in June to give the verdict on the Vols’ punishment.
