New York Mets left fielder Jason Bay will begin the 2011 season on the disabled list after suffering a rib injury.
According to Mets general manager Sany Alderson, Bay felt soreness in his left ribcage during batting practice on Tuesday and was examined by team doctors.
“At this particular time we have to be very cautious, because I don’t want to lose this guy for a month,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “If we have to lose him for a week, 10 days, that’s a hell of a lot better than losing him for two months.”
Bay signed a four-year, $66 million deal with the Mets before last season. He then batted .259 with six homers and 47 RBIs in only 95 games for the team last year.
Rookie outfielder Lucas Duda will start in left field on Opening Day for the Mets.
