The Dallas Mavericks have signed forward Corey Brewer to a multiple-year contract. The deal will begin in roughly the $2 million per season range.
The 6-foot-9 swingman, who was obtained in the three-team, 13-player trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York, was surprisingly waived on Monday by the New York Knicks.
Several teams showed immediate interest in Brewer and the San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics were in the mix before Brewer agreed to a deal with the Mavericks.
Brewer is one of the better young defenders in the NBA and will provide a strong backup at the shooting guard position for Dallas. The University of Florida alum could develop nicely into a role similar to that of Bruce Bowen with the San Antonio Spurs earlier in the decade.
Brewer started all 82 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season and averaged a career-high 13 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Limited to only 22 starts this season, his numbers dropped to 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
