Arkansas eyeing Mizzou’s Mike Anderson

Arkansas is trying desperately to hire Missouri coach, Mike Anderson, as next basketball head. It might happen in the coming days, according to multiple sources.

The Missouri Athletic Department is denying those claims – pointing to a detail of his contract that says he must get written permission to speak with any other team about coaching positions.

But the story does have legs. And is moving quickly.

Mike DeArmond, of the Kansas City Star Campus Corner, writes:

But shortly after 10 a.m. I spoke with a parent of one of the current Missouri players who told me he believes Anderson is leaving.

“I heard Friday that he was leaving,” that parent told me. “But I haven’t heard anything official.

“The last time (involving talks with Oregon) you heard he was leaving and then he didn’t. But this time seems a little different.”

The thought is Anderson would leave to coach where he worked under Nolan Richardson – who was the last coach to take the Razorbacks to the Final Four – for 17 years.

Anderson is expected to accept the head coaching job recently vacated by John Pelphrey.

Chris Lincoln, Sports Director at KTUL-TV in Tulsa, was the first to break the story via Twitter:

Reports out of Arkansas say Mizzou coach Mike Anderson to be introduced tomorrow in Fayetteville as Razorbacks new head basketball coach.

Lincoln has since retracted his tweet – saying it’s probably going to happen now.

As far as Anderson is concerned, Tubby Smith was once quoted as saying, “Mike Anderson is a shining star. He is the total package. A man of high integrity, class, confidence — a winner.”

Arkansas fans mouth’s are most likely watering. He is a winner, indeed. Anderson turned the sub-.500 Mizzou program around in just two seasons – taking them from sub-.500 to Elite Eight.

As rumors continue to swirl, there are more reports creeping out that Anderson is going to end up a Razorback.

Gary Parrish of CBSsports is reporting that:

“Missouri coach Mike Anderson is close to reaching an agreement in principle to become Arkansas’ men’s basketball coach, but a deal has not been finalized and no formal introduction is planned for Sunday, a source close to the Arkansas program told CBSSports.com late Saturday.”

Like all things in life, though, it isn’t set in stone. Rivals, through Yahoo! Sports, reported about two weeks ago that Anderson wasn’t going anywhere and planned to retire in Missouri.

His Wikipedia page was changed Saturday night after reports surfaced that Anderson was going to take the job today. Now, it reads:

“Mike Anderson (born December 12, 1959) is an American college basketball coach and the current head men’s basketball coach at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.”

  1. this is 100% false, as he has not even interviewed for the job. citing a Tulsa reporter on Arkansas is 100% ludicrous, he does not even cover Arkansas or Missouri, so his sources are fake as shit. this is the same tool that stirred the pot when MU had interest in the big 10 with false leaks and sources. he is a Nebraska homer till the end, and has no life, i also heard from my sources that he likes **** as well.

ESPN college BB people are saying this is false, so i would trust their insight more then a loser in Oklahoma.

if he goes to Arkansas, so be it, he is a grown man and can do what ever he wants.
that said your journalism is just as awful as the guy in Tulsa journalism.

provide correct facts, and truths when reporting, do not report bull***t.

again you have to interview for the job, how can he be in Missouri recruiting, then in Kansas later that day, and have interviewed for the job?

tmz is in the future for all of you, thats your best option.

    • Jeremy,

Thanks for reading. At the time of this report, this information was being reported as “truth” by that Tulsa reporter, CBS, and one of our own sources in Texas. As journalists, we like to have three sources saying the same thing before we go with a story – at the time they were. Perhaps they were all regurgitating the same “false” information from the same person. We will see in the coming few days.

Thank you for keeping us in check.

      Best,
      Nick

  3. This is awesome. I’ve read the same thing a few other places. If Mike can do the same thing in Arkansas that he did in Mizzou, I bet the Razorbacks are just 3 or so years away from contending with Florida and Georgia.

What do you guys think the SEC basketball scene will look like over the next 5 years?

  5. David,

That would be a question best answered by our “SEC Expert” Jon Wiener. He’s on vacation right now… but when he gets back, I’ll let him know someone’s been askin’ ;bout the SEC.

    He’ll be stoked.
