Redskins release Clinton Portis

The Washington Redskins have released veteran running back Clinton Portis.

Portis appeared on 106.7 the Fan in Washington D.C. on Monday morning and informed the show that he would no longer be a Washington Redskin.

“I should be released today,” Portis said. “No hard feelings.”

Portis was set to make $8 million in 2011, and there was no way the Redskins could roll the dice with him at that price. Head coach Mike Shanahan made the questionable decision to enter training camp last year with a stable of aging running backs and none of them could stay healthy or effective.’

The veteran running back finished the 2010 campaign with 54 rushing attempts for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns before suffering a groin injury that landed him on injured reserve. Some team might give Portis an opportunity as a backup running back, but his starting days are likely over.

Portis is just 77 yards away from 10,000 rushing yards in his career.
