The Washington Wizards have traded point guard Kirk Hinrich and center Hilton Armstrong to the Atlanta Hawks for point guard Mike Bibby, guard Jordan Crawford, and forward Maurice Evans and a first round draft pick.
It is a bold move for the Atlanta Hawks as they will take on significant salary and Hinrich will take over as the team’s starting point guard.
Although Hinrich is averaging 11 points, 4.5 assists and a steal per game in 30 minutes, he is being paid $9 million over the next two seasons. With such a high salary and #1 overall pick John Wall as the future in Washington, Hinrich became expendable.
Bibby will provide financial relief to the Wizards as his contract expires at the end of the 2010-2011 season. The team could decide to buyout his contract but will likely let him take over the backup point guard role for Wall.
Jordan Crawford gives the Wizards a nice young forward prospect and is an upgrade over Cartier Martin. You may remember him for being the player that dunked over LeBron James at a Nike basketball camp last summer. Evans provides the Wizards with another expiring contract at the end of the season.
More to come…
