The 2007 All-Star, Gil Meche, announced his retirement today. The 6-foot-3 right hander is walking away from the game with one year left on his $55 million, five-year contract.
He was slowed by an injured shoulder last season.
Meche released a statement through the Royals. In it, he said the decision was the hardest of his life. The 10-year veteran played in his first game as a 20-year old in 1999. He started 15 games, finished 8-4 with a 4.73 ERA.
In his final season, he started nine games and finished 0-5, gave up nine home runs and walked 38 while only striking out 41.
He played four seasons with the Seattle Mariners and six with the Kansas City Royals.
