The Philadelphia Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
Just five days after head coach Andy Reid said McDermott would return in 2011, he changed his mind and fired the 36-year old coordinator.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen was the first to report the story Saturday evening. McDermott served as the Eagles defensive coordinator for two seasons after taking over for the late Jim Johnson.
This year’s defense allowed 31 passing touchdowns – tied for third-worst in the league and were the NFL’s worst red-zone defense.
The team granted defensive backs coach Dick Jauron permission to interview with the Cleveland Browns for their defensive coordinator position earlier this week. Jauron could be a candidate for the Eagles new opening.
