Pat Shurmur named Cleveland Browns Head Coach

The Cleveland Browns have announced that former St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will be the team’s new head coach.

The team will announce Shurmur as the 13th head coach in franchise history at a press conference on Friday afternoon. Shurmur is expected to receive a contract similar to the 4-year $11.2 million deal Ron Rivera received from the Carolina Panthers earlier this week.

Pat’s uncle, the late Fritz Shurmur, helped lead the Packers to Super Bowls in the late 90s as the team’s defensive coordinator.

The move will officially be announced Thursday afternoon as Shurmur’s agent, Bob LaMonte meets with Browns officials.  LaMonte is also the representative for Browns President Mike Holmgren, executive vice president Bryan Wiedmeier, and General Manager Tom Heckert.

The 45-year old Shurmur was considered one of the top young coordinators in the NFL.  He began his coaching career working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia for a decade and helped develop Donovan McNabb as the team’s quarterback coach.  Shurmur becomes the sixth head coach to come from Reid’s staff joining Brad Childress, John Harbaugh, Steve Spagnolo, Leslie Frazier, and the recently hired Ron Rivera.

Shurmur is expected to target current Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Juan Castillo as his potential offensive coordinator.
