The Baltimore Orioles have signed pitcher Justin Duchscherer to a 1-year deal worth upwards of $4.5 million including performance based incentives.
The six-foot-three right-hander played most of his career in Oakland after breaking into the Bigs in 2001 with Texas.
The 8-year veteran has battled elbow and hip injuries throughout his career and will earn $700,000 in base salary. Duchscherer will make another $1.1 million if he is on the opening day roster and can make an additional $2.7 million based on his performance throughout the 2011 campaign.
The 33-year old, two-time All-Star, is 33-25 lifetime with a 3.13 ERA. He enjoyed the best season of his career back in 2008 posting a 10-8 record with a 2.54 ERA in 141.2 innings. Last season, Duchscherer appeared in just 5 games going 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA.
Per baltimore.orioles.mlb.com:
Duchscherer told MLB.com last week that it was pretty “black and white” that he wanted to go to a team that viewed him as a starter, and that he preferred to pitch on the East Coast since his son lives in New Jersey. That whittled down the finalists to the Nationals and Orioles, both teams who Lapa said offered the opportunity for his client “to contribute at the middle to top end of the starting rotation.”
Duchscherer’s deal, pending a physical that will take place Tuesday or Wednesday.
