Phillies sign Dennys Reyes

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes to a 1-year deal worth $1.1 million. The deal includes a mutual option for the 2012 season worth $1.35 million.

Bullpen help was one of the top priorities for General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. heading into this offseason. Lefty JC Romero became a free agent after the season and the team chose not to bring him back after inconsistant performance over the last two years.

The Phillies had similar offers out to Reyes and former Dodger George Sherrill. However after Sherrill agreed to a 1-year $1.2 million deal with the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday afternoon, Reyes became the Phillies man for the bullpen.

The 33-year old pitcher went 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA in 59 appearances (38.0 innings) last season. However if 2010 is any indication, Reyes is not the answer as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen. Last season left-handed hitters batted .307/.409/.453. Reyes also had control issues in 2010 walking 21 batters while striking out 25.

Reyes will be joining his 11th MLB team. He has held left handed hitters to an average line of .238/.322/.337 over his 14 year career.
