Per the AP:
Notre Dame and Army will play this Saturday in the first college football game at the new Yankee Stadium, but the matchup will harken back to a meeting that was called the Game of the Century.
The year was 1946 and World War II was finally over. Top-ranked Army had been the national champion the past two seasons but No. 2 Notre Dame was loaded with servicemen back from the war.
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says the game symbolized the transition from wartime America to a nation at peace, where things like football mattered again.
Before a crowd of 75,000 at the original Yankee Stadium, the two
teams clashed in a defensive struggle. The final score? Army 0, Notre Dame 0.
