Round the ‘Block: 10/5/10

Great show this week. After a late start (behind the scenes at least) the overall product turned out pretty good. I felt like the 2009 Vikings. Ba-zing!

Check the podcasts: Raw audio of the Eric Bartz and Colt Murray interviews.

My Five Cents

Former color commentator for Oregon State Beaver Sports on KBVR, Eric Bartz, called in to give the Left Coast Update. The first of many, I hope. Broke down everything from Jake Locker to Derrek Anderson. Colt Murray stopped in and reminisced about the old days and talked MLB playoffs. And Alex Brewer popped his head in the studio from across the hall and graced the show with his presence. Then threatened to fire me and take over my show.

It was an empty threat. I hope.

All-in-all, good times. I felt the most “at home” and “in my element” since I started at WJPZ. Probably because I spent 40 of the first 55 minutes of talking. Oh, and apologies about the music. I was hittin’ that random button.

Interesting Post Script to my conversation with Bartz – he wants to do it more often. That means I’ll be looking to him to offer up a quick Left Coast Update here on The [Five] every week. Sucks for you, Bartz!

Tuesday Night Stew

So, this just in, Marshawn Lynch is a Seahawk. And it turns out eating soup with a fork is a good idea, too.

“We bring a guy into the program that we think is going to give us a little boost,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll told the Associated Press after practice Tuesday. “You know that we’ve emphasized trying to get this running game in order. We hope that he’ll help in that regard. We’re pleased to get that done. We’ll move forward this week. It’s good we’re on a break. It doesn’t disrupt a game week preparation and we’ll get him in here as soon as possible and we’ll get to work.”

Oh, Pete.

Let me translate that for you:

“Lynch is another example of a Cal running back that is fast but as of now is a disappointment. Our running game is often described as the same (read: Justin Forsett and Leon Washington). We hope if you combine his disappointment with our disappointment the double negative will cancel eachother out and create a positive. I’m glad it’s a bye week because we need a lot of work.”

Truly, Marshawn Lynch is a cut-back, quick to the hole, runs best in a zone blocking scheme (who doesn’t) running back. He is good in open space and can break tackles. But, he is at best an average to above average back on a team without a solid offense line. He can’t create plays like an Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson. He doesn’t “make guys miss” or “bowl over defenders” like other players. He can’t be THE guy. He is at his best when surrounded by talent.

In 2008, when he made the Pro Bowl his teammates included: QB Trent Edwards (before concussions No. 1, 2 and 3), WR Lee Evans, WR Josh Reed, LG Derrick Dockery (one of the best guards in the game at the time) and RT Langston Walker.

And last I check Seattle started: QB Matt Hasslebeck (old), WR Mike Williams (out of the league last year), Deion Branch (a shell of his former self), LT Russell Okung, LG Chester Pitts, C Chris Spencer, RG Stacy Andews and RT Sean Locklear.

Not a single one of those guys makes me anything but perplexed. Talent isn’t even a word to them, it’s a dream. An alternate reality. They can only read about it in books. To them, Leonard Nimoy lives there.

If the Seahawks think Lynch is going to do anything but waste their time and money – they need a vacation.

And a lobotomy.

I’m sure there is weird news happening. I just never looked it up. I know LeBron pulled the race care. That’s weird. I didn’t realize race had anything to do with stupidity.
