First Chipotle Opens in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY – Chipotle is here. The popular fraanchise opened it’s doors in Dewitt Tuesday – complete with a line around the block and a one hour wait.

But according to customers, it was worth it.

“I’d come here 6 days a week if I could,” Harris Maidenbaum said. “There was a Chipotle next to my building in New York City, I ate there everyday of the week.”

Maidenbaum and his friend Josh Albert waited in line for an hour.

“I like the salad,” Albert said.

The line was 75 people long just after the noon hour. Mark Sukenig waited in line on his day off. He had only heard rumors of the famed Chipotle.

“I’ve never had it,” he said. “But I am a burrito guy.”

The food is as popular with customers as the revenue and new jobs are with the local economy. Jacqueline Gonzalez, Marketing Consultant for Chipotle, said the company is excited to offer new jobs to the Syracuse area.

“We hired between 25 and 30 people to open this store,” she said. “And we will hire five more as we settle the schedule.”

That’s up to 35 people who now have medical, dental and vision benefits, a 401k and free meals.

Chipotle isnt the only business to open its doors on Erie Blvd. recently. Two other businesses opened this past summer. Another is set to open in the coming weeks.

And business, for Chipotle, isn’t slow.

“We expect to make $10,000 today,” Gonzale said.

Not bad considering one burrito sells for just under five dollars.
