On homecoming night the Forest Grove Vikings unveiled a new mascot but couldn’t rally for the victory. The Vikings (0-3, 1-5) had their losing streak slide to five games with a 41-0 loss to the Newburg Tigers Friday night.
“It’s really disappointing,” sophomore running back Jon Dober said after the game. “That’s all I [can] say.”
Dober finished the night with 93 yards rushing.
“We saw glimpses of good things tonight,” head coach Dwight Jensen said. “But too many turnovers.”
The trouble began on the second play from scrimmage. A play-action pass turned sour for the Vikings when Newburg’s Dylan Hansen returned a fumble for six points. The ensuing extra point was good to putt he score at 7-0, Newburg, only 50 seconds into the game.
Forest Grove would answer with a 10-play 42-yard drive that featured two “fly-sweep” runs by junior Brandon Carow – who is also the teams kicker and punter. The drive took nearly six minutes off the clock. The drive would come up short, though on a incomplete pass on fourth-and-2 to give Newburg the ball on their own 34-yard line.
Newburg would score on the ensuing drive on a six-yard touchdown run by senior Joey Chandler. And it would be all Chandler for the remainder of the half. He would score two more times – on runs of one and 19 yards – and finish the first half with 153 toal yards and three touchdowns. The teams went into the locker room 34-0.
An interception return for a touchdown by Newburg would be the only score in the second half. But Forest Grove put together a 7-play 54-yard drive that put the Wikings only a yard away from paydirt late in the fourth quarter before three fumbles on four plays would lead to a turnover on downs.
Again,” Jensen said.”We had too many mistakes down there.”
