Beaver football camp: August 7th

Goodness.

Al Afalava is making it known that the team may miss Brian Payton in the locker room – but not on the field. The senior safety picked off two balls – nearly nabbed a third at one point. He covered the field better than the grass. Even Greg Laybourn got into the action and had a pick of his own.

The offense continues to look… good. Its understandable that this early in camp there are a few bumps in the road, but just like looking through a dirty window, once you get the cleaner out – it will look great. It just needs some elbow grease.

The bright spot continues to be Lyle Moevao. To quote John Madden from his Madden ’05 game, “He can throw ’em short, he can throw ’em long, he can throw ’em medium, he can throw ’em anywhere.”

I wonder why Madden dosen’t’t provide commentary on his games anymore?

Canfield is still on repair mode. I had a chance to talk with him after practice and he is frustrated and disappointed. He came out early in camp expecting his shoulder to be healed and he’s got nothing from it but troubles, he said.

The shoulder has been giving problems and he is trying to rest it until he feels comfortable to go 100%.

Riley agrees. But the way Lyle is playing, Sean might not be able to “Battle” for the starting job.

The offensive line is coming along. While everyone seems to be worried about the O-line – I’m not. Coach Cavanaugh always has his guys ready to play – and play well.

I also had a chance to have a conversation with Aaron Nichols <– watch for that name. He is a redshirt sophomore WR. I know, the Beavers are deep at WR and yes, I also know that the emergence of other players like Chris Johnson and Kyle Brown make it even harder to get a foot in the door – but watch out for him.

This is a guy who puts in more effort and time on the field at understanding the offense, understanding the plays, understanding the coverage than anyone else I could see.

Picture Gallery is post – as always – here.

Enjoy.
