Saw Jay John at the !-5 / Ore. Highway 34 interchange earlier today (Sunday, July 27th). We had a very brief conversation in between filling up our respective gas tanks – at 4.09 / gallon.
I asked him how he was… his response?
“We’re just leaving,” he said, in his brand-new-looking Cal polo. “We’re headed to California.”
I glanced over to his Yukon and it was filled with his family and a few personal belongings. I surmise that the rest of his things were in a U-Haul or already in his new house. The only things he had left to move could fit in a Yukon. Probably because he left the biggest baggage back in Corvallis. You know, the thousands of angry Beaver fans.
I was tempted to say “I know” in response to his move to California, but I held back. No point. I wished him luck. And I meant it. He is a good man, and great person.
He just isn’t the best fit for Oregon State. I’ve said that before.
I bet he will be fine down at Cal and I imagine next year when Cal comes to town that he gets boo’d by some student fans, cheered by others. Who knows?
If Oregon State can muster a winning record by the time Cal visits Corvallis, I imagine fans will be more interested in the game rather than yelling at an opposing coach.
But I have been wrong before
