Knicks coaching merry-go-round

Rumors are flying around the Knicks front office, and Yahoo! Sports, says,

New York Knicks assistant coach Herb Williams, a hard worker and intensely loyal, has become the ultimate "Survivor." And he is expected to survive another head-coaching change and even be considered by Donnie Walsh as Isiah Thomas’ successor.

Although Mark Jackson has emerged as a favorite to replace Thomas on the bench, Williams will be interviewed for the Knicks’ head-coaching vacancy – a job he had on an interim basis for the final 43 games of the 2004-05 season, posting a 16-27 (.372) record.

None of the other Knicks assistants are expected to be retained when Thomas is removed sometime after Wednesday’s season finale. Because of his classiness, Williams is a favorite of owner James Dolan; he also is a longtime associate of WalshPhoto By: Getty Images

When it’s finally time for Isiah Thomas and Donnie Walsh to sit down for a meaningful basketball discussion, the embattled head coach might have a hard time convincing the incoming team president that anyone on the roster showed improvement this season.

There aren’t many positives.

Even a salesman like Thomas is having a hard time finding development outside Wilson Chandler, Jamal Crawford and David Lee.

“Right now, you definitely have to talk about Wilson Chandler, particularly the way he’s played the last six, seven games, his rebounding, defense, shot-blocking and shot-making,” Thomas said. “I think Jamal has had a fantastic year with the way he’s played. He’s definitely gotten better, his shot-making, his decision-making. I really like the way he’s played. David, the way he’s developed and come along, he’s really improved his outside shot. He’s got a post-up game now.”

And that’s as far as Thomas went.

He didn’t bother to list those who’ve lost ground, but it’s easy to assume the other 12 guys on the roster might’ve been mentioned.
