You’ve got to think Jay Wright was worried going into last night’s game. As the AP put it, “Seeing all those upset victories left him, well, upset.”
“You’re like, ‘There’s no way it can happen in all four,”’ Wright told the AP.
It’s called Murphy’s Law and it was Wright on. For the record books, at least.
For the first time ever, all four first-round games, at the same arena, on the same day, were upsets. How does your bracket look? Probably like The [Five]’s – toast.
Now the nation can look forward to those epic match-ups in the second round. But instead of featuring teams like: Drake,
Think about it. These teams are now two wins away from maybe a Final Four appearance.
Want the numbers? In 1985, the NCAA expanded to 16 seeds per region. Since that time there’s only been five other match-ups of No. 12 seeds facing a No. 13 in the second round. That’s all. That’s five out of 92 times in 23 years.
Or more easily put. It’s rare. Unless it’s the 2007-2008 NCAA sports year.
It’s going to happen twice on Sunday, when No. 12 Villanova plays No. 13 Siena in the Midwest Region, and No. 12 Western Kentucky faces No. 13 San Diego in the West Region.
In a year that saw an up and down chase for a football national championship, should March be expected to be any quieter?
Fat chance, it’s likely to be even rowdier.
